Specific to United States
- Online / digital submission: Online passport renewal accepts a square JPEG between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 px, unedited, no filters.
- Printed copies: 1 photo, printed on matte or glossy photo paper; do not staple it
- A natural smile is accepted, but a neutral expression is safest.
- Selfies and home-printer photos on plain paper are rejected.

51 × 51 mm (2 × 2 in). The head, measured from the top of the hair to the chin, must be 25–35 mm, with the eyes 28.6–35 mm above the bottom edge.
